Deck Cleaning in Naperville & Surrounding Chicagoland Neighborhoods
The problem we see
Naperville is one of our most-requested service areas. Big lots, mature trees and HOAs that hold properties to a high standard mean clean siding, bright driveways and tidy holiday lights aren't optional here. We run regular routes through White Eagle, Tall Grass, Ashbury and the historic downtown blocks all year long.
How we approach it
Wood decks in Chicagoland need a little more care than most. The sun bleaches them, the rain rots them, the humidity grows mildew on the shaded undersides, and the road salt spray in coastal areas accelerates everything. A high-pressure wash can chew up soft wood fibers, leave the surface fuzzy and splintered, and shorten the life of the deck instead of extending it.
What to expect on the day
We use the soft wash method with a wood-specific cleaner that lifts grey and brings out the natural color. For composite decks (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Azek and others) we use the manufacturer-approved approach — no harsh acids that can damage the cap layer, the right brushes for composite, and pressure dialed way back. Each composite brand has its own recommended cleaning chemistry; we know the differences and use the right one.
What sets us apart
After cleaning, your deck is ready to seal or stain if you choose. We don't currently apply finish ourselves, but we can recommend a couple of solid local stainers we trust. The right time to stain is 48 to 72 hours after cleaning, depending on humidity and shade.
Getting a quote
We clean every part of the deck — surface, railings, balusters, stair treads, stair risers, the underside of the railing where mildew loves to hide, and the perimeter where the deck meets the house. Most residential decks take us two to four hours.
The bottom line
An annual cleaning genuinely doubles the life of a wood deck in Chicagoland. We've seen too many homeowners wait too long, end up with a deck that's too far gone to save, and have to replace what could have been preserved with a $400 annual wash.
What's included
Every job comes with the same checklist. No surprises.
- Soft wash with wood-specific or composite-specific cleaner
- Hand brushing on stubborn spots and grain
- Brightener on wood (optional add-on, restores natural color)
- Railings, balusters, posts and decorative caps
- Stair treads, risers and stringers
- Underside of railings and benches where accessible
- Plant and pet-safe products
- Final rinse and walkthrough
How it works
Inspect
Material check (pressure-treated, cedar, ipe, composite brand), condition assessment, any soft spots or rotten boards flagged. We tell you upfront if any boards look like they need replacement before staining.
Apply
Soft wash solution with the right chemistry for the material. Dwell time of five to ten minutes while the cleaner lifts dirt, grey and mildew.
Agitate + brush
Hand brushing on stubborn spots, gentle wand on the flats. We work with the grain on wood, never against it. Composite gets a softer brush than wood.
Rinse + walkthrough
Full rinse, including under the deck if accessible. Walk the deck with you, point out any issues we found, confirm next steps if you're going to stain.
Why this matters in Chicagoland
Chicagoland's climate is brutal on exteriors
Decks in inland Chicagoland — Downers Grove, Lombard, Schaumburg, Glenview — tend to mildew more because of dense tree cover. They're often built into shaded backyards where the sun doesn't quite dry them out between rains. Brilliant Brother decks in Oak Park, Skokie, Naperville east of I-294 fade faster from sun and salt but mildew less because they get more direct sun.
Why proper technique matters here
Either way, an annual clean keeps the wood from going past the point where it can be brought back. We've seen too many decks where a year of putting it off turned a $400 cleaning job into a $4,000 replacement. The wood doesn't care if you're busy.
DuPage & Cook County realities
Composite decks are sold as 'maintenance-free,' which they're not. They don't rot, but they do grow algae and mildew on the surface, especially in shaded or humid spots. Annual cleaning with the manufacturer-approved chemistry keeps composite looking new and protects the warranty.
HOA, insurance, and resale pressure
Pool decks made of wood (less common but they do exist) need extra attention because of constant water exposure plus chlorine drift. We see these mostly in older Naperville and Hinsdale homes, and they need annual cleaning and brightening to stay in good shape.
Seasonal timing that pays off
Winter storm season is hard on decks. Wind-driven debris damages the finish, branches scrape the surface, and standing water during heavy rain accelerates mildew growth. Most of our regulars schedule deck cleaning in October or November to reset the deck after the season.
More about this service
Naperville's heavy oak and maple canopy drops tannin onto everything below it, and Midwest freeze-thaw cycles work salt and grit deep into concrete pavers. Most homes here benefit from annual house washing in late spring and a driveway clean before winter. Christmas light installs book up by early October.
